Slavin has been making folding screens since the late 1980's. Her early works were fantastical nature scenes cut out and painted on wood with larger than life size dancing cranes, flying fish and magical forests. Influenced by non-western art she looked to India, Japan, China, Africa, and Mexico for inspiration. In the Creation Screens, started in 1991, she has become involved with the origin of being, both of life on our planet and the unfathomable impenetrable universe. She looks at the world around us as she meditates on the basic questions of existence and the cultural strategies humankind has created for dealing with the unknowable.
